Why not fish bank or rabbit bank but piggy bank? It was said that in the mid 15th century in England, metal was expensive. So, people used an affordable and readily available orange clay called “pygg” to make all kinds of things such as jars, cups, plates and so on. So naturally, people started to use the “pygg” jars to contain their loose change which were called “pygg” jars or “pygg” banks. After hundreds of years, likely in the 18th century, potters were asked to make “pygg” banks but they were not familiar with ‘’pygg’’ so they made pig-shaped banks. The piggy banks were made such that there was no retrieval opening and the Piggy banks had to be broken before the money could be used. |
